Maíra Vieira de Paula is a Visual Arts PhD candidate at University of São Paulo, in Brazil. Drawing on a multidisciplinary approach, her doctoral research aims at understanding the role played by photographic appropriation strategies in Brazilian artist Rosana Paulino’s works. Particularly, how Paulino re-signifies 19th century photographs of Black Brazilian individuals in her works. In 2021, with early results of her doctoral research, Paula published the essay “Um antimonumento às Bandeiras”, which has received an honorable mention at Serrote’s 3rd Essay Contest, Brazil’s most prominent magazine in this genre.
