Jorge E. Delgadillo Núñez is a PhD candidate at Vanderbilt University. He is interested in the interlocking histories of slavery, Afro-descendants, and race in colonial and early independent Mexico and the Atlantic world at large. He has been working on the history of Afro-Mexicans in Guadalajara for over 10 years. As an undergraduate he studied the different ways by which enslaved Afro-Mexicans could gain their freedom, both by legal and illegal means. For his masters’ thesis he focused on the integration of Afro-descendants in a Catholic milieu and the social and cultural implications of this process. His current project analyzes the colonial roots of Afro-Mexicans’ invisibility to the eyes of modern Mexican society.
